IDD has chosen to target peripheral diabetic neuropathy as our first focus on diabetic complications. Peripheral neuropathy affects the body's nerves controlling sensation and movement. The initial symptoms of diabetic neuropathy are pain, tingling and loss of feeling in the feet. In its most severe form, neuropathy can lead to foot and leg ulcers and is the leading cause of non-traumatic lower limb amputations. IDD has developed a novel agent, IDD 676 (lidorestat), to treat diabetic neuropathy. An IND was filed in October 1999. Five Phase I studies have been completed and a Phase II study to determine the effect of IDD 676 (lidorestat) on sorbitol levels in patients with diabetes commenced in March 2002 in the United States and Canada.
